SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What Missouri Businesses Actually Need to Know
Search used to mean one thing: Google. Type a query, scan ten blue links, click one. That world hasn't disappeared, but it's no longer the whole picture — and businesses that only think about "SEO" are increasingly missing two entire categories of discovery.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) — the foundation
This is the discipline most people already know: optimizing your site's technical health, content, and local signals so Google ranks you higher for relevant searches. It's still the biggest single channel for most small businesses, and it remains the foundation everything else is built on — you can't skip it and jump straight to the newer disciplines.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — being the direct answer
Increasingly, people don't scan a list of results at all — they ask a voice assistant a question and get one spoken answer, or they see a single answer box at the very top of a Google search with no need to click anything. AEO is the practice of structuring your content — clear questions, clear direct answers, proper schema markup — so that your business is the one selected as that answer, not a competitor down the road.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — being understood by AI
The newest shift: people are starting to ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity conversational questions like "who should I hire to build a website in Missouri" the same way they used to type into Google. GEO is about making sure your business is described accurately and specifically enough online that these AI tools can confidently recommend you — vague marketing language gives an AI model nothing solid to repeat, while specific facts (real prices, real service areas, real specialties) do.
Why Missouri businesses can't afford to ignore any of the three
These three disciplines increasingly overlap — good SEO content structured well also tends to perform for AEO, and factual, consistent information helps both AEO and GEO — but they aren't interchangeable, and neglecting any one of them leaves real opportunity on the table. A business ranking #1 on Google but never mentioned by ChatGPT is only capturing part of how people search today.
We treat all three as distinct specialties with their own dedicated strategy:
- Search Engine Optimization — full technical and content strategy
- AI Search Results — structured, quotable content for voice/answer boxes and AI models that can confidently cite you
If you're only doing one of the three today, you're not behind — most businesses are in the same spot. But the businesses that get ahead of all three now, while most competitors are still only thinking about Google, are the ones building a real, durable advantage.
