These three terms get used interchangeably all the time, but they're genuinely different products with different strengths. Here's the plain-English breakdown.
Website
- Where it lives
- In any web browser — no install, no app store
- Best for
- Getting found, sharing information, building credibility, capturing leads
- Limitations
- Can't send push notifications, can't work offline, no home-screen icon
Web App
- Where it lives
- In a web browser too, but behaves like software — interactive tools, logins, dashboards
- Best for
- Calculators, booking systems, configurators, portals people use but don't need installed (our own Website Builder and template configurator are web apps)
- Limitations
- Same browser-only limits as a website — no push notifications, no offline mode, no app store presence
Native / Cross-Platform App
- Where it lives
- Installed from the App Store or Google Play, lives on the home screen
- Best for
- Push notifications, offline access, camera/GPS/biometrics, the fastest possible performance, app store visibility
- Limitations
- Costs more and takes longer to build than a website; requires app store approval and updates
Which One Do You Actually Need?
This is the question that actually matters, and the honest answer for most small businesses is: start with a website. A website handles the job of getting found, explaining what you do, and capturing leads better than an app does — and it's faster and cheaper to build. A web app makes sense when you need something interactive that people use repeatedly — a booking system, a calculator, a client portal — but there's no real need for it to live on someone's home screen or work without an internet connection.
A native or cross-platform mobile app earns its cost when you specifically need one or more of: push notifications to re-engage customers, offline functionality, access to the camera or GPS, or the credibility and discoverability of being in the App Store and Google Play. If none of those apply yet, a website or web app will serve you better for less money — and we'll tell you that honestly instead of upselling you into an app you don't need yet.
Types of Mobile Apps, Explained Simply
“Mobile app” isn't one single thing — there are a few fundamentally different ways to build one, each with real tradeoffs.
Native Apps
Built specifically for one platform — Swift/Objective-C for iOS, or Kotlin/Java for Android. Two completely separate apps, one for each.
The tradeoff: The best possible performance and deepest access to device features, but you're paying to build (and maintain) two apps instead of one.
Cross-Platform Apps (what we build)
One codebase, written once, that runs as a genuinely native app on both iOS and Android. We build these with React Native.
The tradeoff: Near-native performance and full access to device features (camera, GPS, push notifications) at roughly half the cost and time of building two separate native apps.
Hybrid Apps
A website wrapped inside a thin native shell, so it can be installed from an app store even though it's really just a web page underneath.
The tradeoff: Cheapest and fastest to build, but it usually shows — hybrid apps often feel a little sluggish or "off" compared to something genuinely native.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs)
A website that can be "added to home screen" and behave somewhat app-like — no app store required at all.
The tradeoff: Free to distribute and easy to update, but limited access to device features and no real presence in the App Store or Google Play for people to discover you.
